Silences of the Palace (127 min., Tunisia, 1994)
The film received special mention by the Camera d'Or jury at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival. Set at the end of the French colonial rule in Tunisia, women are for all practical purposes slaves. Alia, the daughter of a beautiful servant, grows up in the King's Palace and realizes she will never leave and must bear children for her masters, to the eternal consternation of their maters' wives.
