What is the West Virginia International Film Festival?

The WVIFF was organized in October 1985 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation to bring critically acclaimed and culturally diverse foreign language and domestic films to West Virginia. Since its inception, the WVIFF has shown films from more than 38 different countries. Fall and Spring Festivals are held annually at the historic WVSC Capitol Center Theater, which is located at 123 Summers Street, Charleston. Filmmakers, producers, actors, animators, screenwriters, film scholars, and journalists appear as guests during both Festivals.

What is the Student Filmmaking Competition?

The WVIFF sponsors an annual Student Filmmaking Competition, which juries student-produced films. Entries may be from any genre and may be submitted as a class project, by an individual, or by a group. The competition is judged by a professional in the film industry and cash prizes are awarded to winners in three divisions. Winning entries will be shown this year during the awards program in the WVSC Capitol Center Theater, 123 Summers Street on Sunday afternoon, June 25, 2006 , the last day of Charleston 's FestivALL.

Who is eligible to enter the Student Filmmaking Competition?

The Student Filmmaking Competition is open to any student enrolled in a West Virginia educational institution at the time the film project was completed (home-schooled students are also eligible). Entries compete in three divisions: Kindergarten through 8th grade; 9th through 12th grades; and College (including Graduate School). Complete eligibility requirements are on the WVIFF website (www.wviff.org).

How do I get started?

While there is no perfect answer, the WVIFF solicited professional "tips" from several multi-media professionals and their advice to aspiring filmmakers appears on the WVIFF website (www.wviff.org).

How do I enter?

Carefully review the rules, regulations, and eligibility requirements on the WVIFF website, which are also available by mail (see contact information below). Print out and complete the entry form on the WVIFF website (also available by mail) and return all required materials to the WVIFF postmarked on or before May 31, 2005.

Can students become active with the WVIFF?

The WVIFF depends on volunteers of all ages to assist the organization in various activities during the year. Students are welcome and encouraged to participate. Volunteers are needed to distribute posters and flyers around the entire state, to represent the WVIFF at other community events, and to plan and present the events sponsored by the WVIFF.
